An airstrike in Myanmar's Rakhine State has left around 40 people dead and dozens more injured, according to reports. The attack, carried out on Wednesday, January 8, targeted an area under the control of the ethnic rebel group Arakan Army, a local news outlet linked to the group has claimed.
Japan basis online news portal `NHK world' reported that the strike reportedly destroyed hundreds of houses, devastating the region further. The Arakan Army, which has been fighting for autonomy in the state for years, recently announced that it had taken control of the regional command center.
Myanmar has been gripped by turmoil nearly four years after a military coup. The country remains a battleground for clashes between the military, pro-democracy forces, and ethnic minority groups.
Human rights organizations report that the ongoing conflict has claimed over 6,000 lives so far, highlighting the grave human toll of the violence.
U
