Nur’s Gana Adhikar Parishad gets EC’s registration

Business Eye Report

Gana Adhikar Parishad led by Nurul Haq Nur has been registered as a political party with the Election Commission (EC).
The EC headed by Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal yesterday declared Gana Adhikar Parishad as a registered political party paving the way for its participation in elections.
The EC allocated 'truck' as the party's election symbol.  The registration number of Gana Adhikar Parishad is 51.
A gazette notification signed by EC Secretary Shafiul Azim said the Commission made it as a registered political party until further order as per the Representation of the People Order, 1972.
Gana Adhikar Parishad headed by former vice president (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) applied to the Election Commissioner seeking the registration before the 12th parliamentary election held on January 7, 2024. It was rejected at that time citing no reason.
On Aug 28, the GOP announced a seven-day ultimatum to the EC asking it to register the party. The EC issued the notice of its registration on Monday.
After the political party registration system was introduced in 2008, at least 39 parties were registered before the ninth general election.
Although the registration number for the GOP is 51, five other parties - Jamaat-E-Islami, Freedom Party, OikyabaddhaNagarikAndolon, PDP and JatiyaGanatantrik Party - lost their registration under court order over failure to fulfil all conditions.
The EC previously registered the AB Party on Aug 21.
Now the total number of registered political parties stands at 46.
