A legal case has been lodged against 230 people, including prominent leaders of the Tangail district Awami League, in connection with an attack and shooting that occurred during the anti-discrimination student movement on August 4. The case was filed by Lal Mia, a 30-year-old resident of Chinamura village in Kalihati upazila, who was injured in the incident.
The complaint, submitted at Tangail police station on Saturday night (August 31), alleges that Lal Mia was shot during the student movement. Officer-in-charge (OC) of Tangail Sadar Police Station, Lokman Hossain, confirmed the case on Sunday evening (September 1). The lawsuit names district Awami League president and Ekushey medalist freedom fighter Fazlur Rahman Khan Farooq as the alleged instigator of the violence.
The case also lists several other key figures from the Tangail district Awami League, including General Secretary Advocate Zoaherul Islam Zoaher, Vice President Khandaker Ashrafuzzaman Smriti, Shahjahan Ansari, Kudrat Elahi Khan, Joint General Secretary Subhash Chandra Saha, Information and Research Secretary Solaiman Hasan, and Forest and Environment Secretary Syed Mahmud Tarek Pulu, among others. Municipal Councilor Hafizur Rahman Swapan, former Councilor Sajjad Ahmed, and various local leaders from Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League, and Sramik League are also named in the complaint.
The case also includes 100 to 150 unnamed individuals as part of the complaint. Many of the accused are reported to have gone into hiding following the recent political upheaval. According to the plaintiff, the anti-discrimination student procession was attacked around 11:00 AM on August 4 as it passed in front of Vivekananda High School and College on the district headquarters road. The attack involved firearms, including shotguns and pistols, as well as traditional weapons such as chapatis, ramadas, and axes. Lal Mia was reportedly hit by a bullet below the left knee and was subsequently admitted to Tangail General Hospital, where he continues to receive treatment.
This case comes amid a broader wave of legal actions following the alleged fall of Sheikh Hasina's government on August 5. In the wake of the political unrest, three separate murder cases have been filed in district headquarters, Mirzapur, and Sakhipur police stations, accusing eight former parliamentarians and numerous Awami League leaders and activists.
The current case against the Awami League leaders and activists highlights ongoing tensions and legal battles stemming from the recent political and social unrest.
