Sound of loud blasts in Myanmar triggers panic in Teknaf

Khorshed Helali, Cox's Bazar

Despite tightened security measures by Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) and Coast Guard to prevent Rohingyainfiltrations; new arrivals from Rakhine have been reported. These individuals claim they are fleeing persecution and violence inflicted by the Arakan Army, seeking refuge in Bangladesh.
The situation along the Teknaf border appears relatively calm at present, with sporadic sightings of residents observing smoke rising from the Myanmar side. The BGB has maintained regular patrols along the Naf River, aiming to curb illegal activities including drug trafficking and arms smuggling, in addition to preventing Rohingya influx. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing heightened vigilance amid concerns over potential spillover effects from the conflict in Myanmar.
Efforts are underway to ensure the safety of residents and maintain stability in the border region. Despite taking efforts, Rohingya infiltration cannot be prevented. According to local sources, Rohingyas come to Bangladesh through 16 border points from Teknaf to Bandarban. Armed Police Battalion (APBN) spokesperson Amir Zafar said they do not have any information about Rohingyas entering.
This should be known better by BGB or Coast Guard.
Meanwhile, in Myanmar's Rakhine state, the conflict between the country's insurgent group Arakan Army and government forces continues.
Till Monday (July 15) evening, the sounds of shelling, mortar shelling and bombardment are still shaking some villages across the border. Noor Hossain, chairman of Sabrang Union Parishad of Teknaf, said that panic had spread due to the sound of heavy weapons.
Mujibur Rahman, chairman of St. Martin's Union Parishad, said that their civil war inside Myanmar is going on in an intense form. Bombing from planes has been going on in Myanmar for several days.
ChayedAlam of TeknafHnila area said the conflict between the country's rebel group Arakan Army and government forces continues. Many members of the junta government are fleeing to Bangladesh. But BGB and Coast Guard are on high alert.
