The body of an unidentified teenage boy has been recovered from a pond located in front of the Narayanganj District Jail. Acting on a tip-off from locals, police from Fatullah Police Station retrieved the body around 12:00 PM on Tuesday (April 8).
According to both police and local residents, around 11:00 AM, people noticed a teenage boy’s body floating in the pond situated next to the Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road, right in front of the district jail. Residents immediately informed Fatullah Police, who then recovered the body and sent it to the morgue of Narayanganj General (Victoria) Hospital for autopsy.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Wasim of Fatullah Model Police Station, who visited the scene, said that the deceased boy appeared to be around 14 to 15 years old. He was wearing white pajama trousers. There were visible injury marks on one side of his face. Blood was seen coming out of his nose, and his cheek appeared swollen.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shariful Islam of Fatullah Model Police Station stated that, initially, it is suspected the teenager might have been a madrasa student who drowned while bathing in the pond. However, the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the autopsy report. Efforts to identify the boy are ongoing, with help from various law enforcement agencies in the district.
OC Shariful Islam further noted that although the pond is situated in front of the district jail, there is no security around it. As a result, people including men, women, and children—often enter the pond to bathe at any time of day or night. He emphasized that it is unsafe to leave the pond without any security measures in place.
Mohammad Forkan Wahid, the superintendent of Narayanganj District Jail, stated that although the pond is located in front of the jail, it technically falls under the jurisdiction of the Roads and Highways Department. Therefore, they are unable to enforce any security measures. However, following this incident, they have formally written to the concerned department requesting action to ensure the pond’s security.
