In a film-like style, a gang of robbers, impersonating DB police, looted 1 crore 10 lakh taka from a private company on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in the Sonargaon area of Narayanganj.
The robbery took place near Dorki Kandi Bridge on Saturday afternoon. The manager of Diba Enterprise, Mohammad Nazim Uddin, filed a written complaint with Sonargaon police on the same night.
According to the complaint, Nazim Uddin and the driver of the company’s microbus, Mamun Sheikh, had withdrawn the money from the City Bank’s corporate branch in Motijheel, Dhaka. They were heading to the company’s branch in Chandpur when a gang of six robbers, traveling in a silver-colored XJIO, stopped their vehicle. The robbers posed as DB police officers, ordered a search of the vehicle, and then held the victims at gunpoint. After blindfolding and handcuffing them, they took the money and valuables, amounting to over 1 crore 10 lakh taka, and fled.
Despite the incident happening on a holiday, the company clarified that such large transactions are made via a signed cheque by the company owner, who is currently abroad.
Sonargaon police chief Mohammad Abdul Bari did not respond to multiple phone calls, but Investigating Officer Rasheduel Hasan Khan said they were investigating the case with the help of technology. Narayanganj Additional Police Superintendent (Kh-Circle) Asif Imam also confirmed that he was aware of the incident but could not provide further details as he was on leave.
