Police removes special school teachers from road

Police removed teachers from special schools for disabled students at the Kadam Foara intersection near the National Press Club in the capital around 1pm on Wednesday.

As a result, vehicular movement resumed on the road after being halted for around 40 minutes.

From around 12:30pm, police repeatedly requested the teachers to clear the road.

They also proposed that a few representatives accompany them to submit their memorandum to the chief adviser’s residence at the State Guest House Jamuna.

However, the teachers refused to comply. Meanwhile, traffic congestion worsened and became severe.

The police were compelled to create a barricade and forcibly remove the teachers from the road.

No baton charges were used by the police.

Earlier, at around 12:15pm, when the police obstructed the teachers' march towards the chief adviser’s residence, the teachers responded by occupying the road and lying down, wrapped in white shrouds, which completely halted traffic movement.

The demands of the Bangladesh Special Schools Coordination Council include: the immediate recognition and MPO (Monthly Pay Order) inclusion of all special (autistic and disabled) schools; the establishment of disabled-friendly infrastructure in all special schools; a minimum education allowance of Tk3,000 for special students; the provision of mid-day meals, educational materials, sports equipment, and therapy centers for students; and the creation of employment opportunities and rehabilitation under a vocational education curriculum.
