A female garment worker was killed in a road accident in Dhaka’s Banani area on Monday morning, triggering protests and severe traffic congestion on surrounding roads, including Airport Road and the Elevated Expressway.
Garment worker Minara, 19, was killed while she was crossing the road near Banani Chairman Bari around 6 am, said Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Russell Sarwar.
Following the accident workers from nearby garment factories took to the streets in protest, blocking the main road and halting vehicular movement.
Police are trying to clear the roads, OC Sarwar said.
According to Gulshan Traffic Division’s Facebook page a woman was killed in a road accident at the Chairman Bari U-turn but the vehicle responsible has not been identified yet.
Protesting garment workers have blocked both incoming and outgoing traffic, including on the Elevated Expressway, it added.
Gulshan Traffic Division has advised commuters to use diversion routes via Gulshan-1, Gulshan-2, and Amtoli for both inbound and outbound travel.
