In Narayanganj, the river police have arrested seven active members of a gang involved in murdering drivers, dumping their bodies in the river, and hijacking auto-rickshaws.
The arrested individuals are identified as Liyon (32), Md. Borhan alias Imran alias Sohel alias Pichchi (21), Md. Shawon Bepari (22), Mosha. Parveen Begum (22), Shahin Molla (30), Mohammad Ali (55), and Md. Al Amin Sardar (38).
During the arrest, the police recovered a hijacked auto-rickshaw, a mobile phone (Itel) belonging to a murdered driver, sedatives used to incapacitate victims, and cash amounting to 25,000 taka obtained from selling an auto-rickshaw.
The information was confirmed on Monday (February 17) by Abdul Mabud, in-charge of the Kanchpur River Police Outpost. Earlier, on January 16, the floating body of an unidentified man (aged 51) was recovered from the Shitalakkhya River near the west bank by the World Food Storage area adjacent to the Silo Ghat in the Siddhirganj police station area of Narayanganj.
After the identity of the body was confirmed through electronic and print media, the victim’s family filed a murder case on February 5 at the Siddhirganj Police Station. Based on the case, police conducted operations in various areas of the district and arrested the seven members of this organized murder and hijacking gang.
Superintendent of Police for Narayanganj River Police Region, Md. Alomgir Hossain, BPM, led the operation with Inspector Md. Abdul Mabud and a special team formed under the Narayanganj River Police Region. Their efforts uncovered the main motive behind the murder, recovered the hijacked auto-rickshaw, and led to the arrest of the accused.
SP Alomgir Hossain stated that the gang had been operating in different areas of Narayanganj for a long time. Their activities included incapacitating auto-rickshaw drivers using sedatives, killing them, dumping their bodies in the river, and stealing the vehicles for sale.
