Protesters rallied at Shahbagh on today afternoon, rejecting the recent decision to set the age limit for entry into government jobs at 32. Carrying red cards, they demanded that the limit be extended to 35 years.
Around 35 demonstrators gathered in front of the public library in Shahbagh on Sunday, voicing their discontent and calling for immediate action to address their demands.
Protester MA Ali said: “We want to inform the current government that the age limit must be raised to 35. Students will do whatever it takes to achieve this. You are in power because of our sacrifices, and now it’s time to listen to us.”
Another activist, Mohammad Sohail, pointed to the recommendations of the reform committee formed during their earlier struggles: “The committee suggested an age limit of 35 for men and 37 for women, yet it has been set at 32. This is not what we fought for.”
He added: “We reject the decision of 32 years—it is a farce. Our struggle will continue until the age limit is extended to 35. That’s why we are showing the government the red card.”
The protest took place under tight security, with a significant police presence on-site to prevent any untoward incidents.
The demand for increasing the age limit to 35 has been a long-standing issue, with many arguing it would provide fairer opportunities to job seekers who face delays in completing their education or entering the workforce due to various systemic challenges.
