Labannya Ahmed’s first death anniv observed

The first death anniversary of Labannya Ahmed, former Director (Deputy Secretary) of the Public Relations Department at the Parliament Secretariat, was observed yesterday with prayers and charitable acts.

In her memory, food was served to orphans, along with prayers for her soul’s peace. A memorial meeting took place at the Sangskriti Bikash Kendra in Banglamotor of the city on Wednesday evening.

Among others, former NBR Chairman Badiur Rahman, Labannya’s parents Nasir Ahmed and Shahenshah Begum, and other dignitaries including Lutfar Rahman, Mominul Haque Dulu, Mahbub Panna, Rehana Parveen, Saidul Dewan, Morsheda Munni, Nishat Jahan Rana, and Ajanta Rani Saha, spoke in the function. And the program hosted by Anannya Ahmed.

Speakers at the memorial event recalled Labannya Ahmed’s inspiring personality and impactful career. 
They highlighted her sincere approach to work, her compassion, and her dedication, which earned her deep respect and affection from colleagues.

The program began with Farzana Wahid Sayan’s song dedicated to Labannya, Then a duet performance by Nafis Kamal & Sagar Sen, after that Sharmin Lucky & Sagar Sen narrated Labannyo’s biography, Sabrina Nipu, Maury & Sabrina Nipu sung Randra Sangeet, and Sabbir Ahmed Shubo also recited poems in her memory.

Labannya Ahmed completed her master’s degree from the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at Dhaka University. 
She began her career by joining a prominent newspaper and later joined the Parliament Secretariat as an Assistant Director in the Public Relations Department in 1966, eventually rising to the position of Director.

She is niece of Shaheed Shahidullah Kaiser and Shaheed Zahir Raihan, Labannya came from a family of freedom fighters. Her father, Nasir Ahmed, was an organizer and weapons trainer during the Liberation War and the plaintiff in the intellectual murder case filed in 1972. Her mother, Shahenshah Begum, is an active member of the Ghatak-Dalal Nirmul Committee.

Labannya passed away on October 25, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. while undergoing treatment for blood cancer at Tata Medical Centre in Kolkata. She had been battling the illness since 2018 and had undergone a bone marrow transplant, though her condition worsened due to postoperative complications, according to her cousin, Ershadul Huq Tinku, CEO of Cool Exposure.

Throughout her life, she was associated with various social organizations, including SWID Bangladesh, Shishu Kalyan Parishad, and the Acid Survivors Foundation.

Labannya is survived by her three sons, numerous relatives, and countless admirers. She was born in 1967 in Daroga Bari, Bara Machua village, Pirojpur district.
