12,000 bhori of gold missing from Samabaya Bank: Adviser

Local Government Adviser AF Hassan Ariff has raised concerns over the disappearance of 12,000 bhori of gold from Bangladesh Samabaya Bank Ltd, saying that the bank’s assets are currently dispossessed.

"Other cooperatives are preoccupied with conflicts and lawsuits regarding leadership positions within empty committees," he said during a press conference after the 57th Annual Planning Conference of the Bangladesh Rural Development Academy (BRDA) on Sunday.

The event featured special guests including PPRC Chairman Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman, local government expert Professor Dr Tofail Ahmed, and BRDA Director General Saif Uddin Ahmed.

It was chaired by Mosammat Shahaanara Khatun, secretary of the Rural Development and Cooperatives Division of the Ministry of LGRD.

During his address, the adviser said: “Cooperatives are struggling due to a lack of cooperative mentality among their members. They are primarily interested in entering committees rather than focusing on genuine development.”

The conference also highlighted the BRDA's ongoing research and initiatives in rural development and cooperatives in Bangladesh.

Special guests provided various recommendations during their speeches, aiming to address the challenges facing the sector.
