Abdus Sobhan Golap, former MP of Madaripur-3 and Awami League's publicity and publications secretary has been placed on a three-day remand in connection with the murder of garment worker Rubel during the protests of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.

Golap was presented in court this morning (2 September), where the investigating officer sought a seven-day remand.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan granted a three-day remand instead, a police sub-inspector present in court told media.

Earlier, on 22 August, Rubel's father, Rafiqul Islam, filed a murder case at Adabor Police Station against 147 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Golap was arrested on 25 August from his residence in the capital's West Nakhalpara area.

The case alleges that on 5 August Rubel was shot during a violent clash on Ring Road in Adabor, where he was protesting along with other students. He succumbed to his injuries two days later in the hospital.

Abdus Sobhan Golap was elected as a Member of Parliament from Madaripur-3 in December 2018 and was appointed as the secretary for publicity and publications of the Awami League during the party's national conference last December.
