Man arrested for brutally killing endangered fishing cat with spear in Chuadanga

A case has been filed in connection with the killing of a fishing cat in Dhanagora village of Kudulgachhi Union in Chuadanga district. Police have arrested Md. Alamgir Hossain (38) in relation to the incident.

On the afternoon of March 21, Alamgir Hossain killed a fishing cat by stabbing it near the Manikdoya road. Mintu (35) and Md. Saiful Islam (45) were also involved in assisting him in the act.

The incident came to light after a video of the killing went viral on Facebook, drawing the attention of the Forest Department. Today, a team from the Forest Department visited the site of the incident. The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, along with the Forest Department authorities, have issued necessary directives.

After inspecting the site, the Damurhuda Upazila administration instructed the Darshana Police Station to file a case. The police station registered the case and arrested the accused, Alamgir Hossain, who has been sent to jail.

Voluntary organizations from Chuadanga, Manabatar Jonno and Pankouri, have assisted in this matter. The Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division in Khulna has distributed awareness leaflets regarding the conservation of fishing cats.
