N’ganj Chhatra Dal Activist Killed, Youth Arrested

A Chhatra Dal activist was stabbed to death in Narayanganj Sadar Upazila. A young man suspected to be involved in the incident was beaten by locals and handed over to the police.

The incident occurred on Sunday (March 9) at around 10:15 PM near the Shaheed Minar on Bhasha Sainik Road in the city, according to Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Nasir Ahmad.

On Monday morning (March 10), the victim's father, Mohammad Khokon, filed a murder case at Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station. Later, the arrested youth, Samrat, was shown as detained in connection with the case.

The deceased, Md. Apurba (25), was the son of Mohammad Khokon from the Masdair area of the city. He was a garment worker by profession, and his ancestral home was in Srinagar Upazila of Munshiganj, according to the police. However, Chhatra Dal has claimed Apurba as one of their activists.

The arrested youth, Samrat Hossain (20), is the son of Md. Hossain from the Gola Chipa area. He worked at a food shop on Bhasha Sainik Road. Police reported recovering a knife from him at the time of his arrest.

Azizul Islam, former joint secretary of the Narayanganj Metropolitan Chhatra Dal, stated that on Sunday night, Chhatra Dal activists organized a torchlight procession against rape from the Masdair area. As the procession was concluding, Samrat allegedly made inappropriate comments, leading to an argument and scuffle with Apurba and his associates.

“At one point, someone stabbed Apurba in the chest. He was being taken to the hospital but died on the way. After the incident, Chhatra Dal activists beat up Samrat and another person. The other individual managed to escape, but Samrat was handed over to the police.”

Following the murder, Chhatra Dal activists staged a protest in front of the hospital, demanding a fair investigation and swift justice.

OC Nasir Ahmad said, “An argument broke out due to inappropriate remarks about the rally, leading to the stabbing. The injured person was taken to Narayanganj 300-Bed Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. A knife was recovered from the arrested youth, and the case is being investigated with utmost importance.”
