Rohit Sharma, India's captain, on Wednesday overtook compatriot Sachin Tendulkar with his record seventh World Cup century, keeping his team on track for a dominant victory over Afghanistan.

Rohit tore through the opposition attack at New Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium, chasing 273 for win.

He raised the fans to its feet with his century off 63 balls, breaking Tendulkar's World Cup record of six tonnes.

Rohit's century was also the fastest by an Indian in a World Cup, beating Kapil Dev's century against Zimbabwe in 1983.

Rohit blasted the ball all over the place to achieve 1,000 World Cup runs and then broke Chris Gayle's record of 553 sixes across all forms.

Afghanistan scored 272-8 after opting to bat on a pitch that had seen a World Cup record 754 runs scored in the previous match, when South Africa scored 428 to defeat Sri Lanka.

Jasprit Bumrah, the host team's pace spearhead, shone out with his best World Cup bowling stats of 4-39.

Afghanistan fell to 63-3 when captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (80) and Azmatullah Omarzai (62) combined for 121 runs to help the team comeback.

Bumrah caught Ibrahim Zadran behind for 22 points and celebrated by pointing to his temple.

Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur took the wickets of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who was on 21, and Rahmat Shah, who was on 16.

The innings was subsequently rebuilt by Shahidi, a left-handed batter, and Omarzai in a century stand, compelling skipper Rohit Sharma to rotate his bowlers.

Shahidi smacked Pandya for four to bring up his half-century and followed it up with a six as Omarzai reached his second ODI fifty.

Omarzai, who struck two fours and four sixes in his 69-ball knock, too attempted to bat but was caught by Pandya.

Shahidi maintained his attack with regular boundaries but was lbw by Kuldeep Yadav in an effort to reverse sweep the left-arm wrist spinner.

Bumrah hit twice, including Rashid Khan, to further devastate Afghanistan on a batting-friendly wicket.

Afghanistan lost their first match to Bangladesh, while tournament favourite India won their first match against five-time winners Australia.
